Dual Degrees

The program offers interdisciplinary education for students desiring dual study in medicine (M.D./M.P.H.), dental medicine (D.M.D./M.P.H.), law (J.D./M.P.H.), social work (M.S.W./M.P.H.), and pharmacy (Pharm.D./M.P.H.). Interdisciplinary study typically is accomplished by respective programs recognizing 12 credits of coursework completed within the other program (e.g., public health credits waived for specified courses completed within the schools of medicine, dental medicine, law, social work, pharmacy, or nursing).

M.D./M.P.H. and D.M.D./M.P.H.

Students admitted to UCONN Schools of Medical or Dental Medicine will complete STAGE 1 MDelta curriculum and earn the Graduate Certificate in Social Determinants of Health & Disparities (CSDH&D). Completion of this requirement reflects 12 graduate credits of advanced standing coursework toward the MPH Degree. M.D./M.P.H. and D.M.D./M.P.H. candidates are expected to complete the dual degrees during a 5-year interval consisting of 4 years of full-time study in their clinical discipline along with 1 year of full-time study in the Program in Applied Public Health Sciences. Medical students interested in the MD/MPH option should contact admissions@uchc.edu, School of Medicine Admissions Office. Dental students interest in the DMD/MPH option should contact Eric Bernstein, JD, EdD, School of Dental Medicine. J.D./M.P.H.

This dual degree program is intended for students who wish to integrate study of the legal and health care systems Students admitted to UConn School of Law will complete a minimum of 36 credits of PUBH-related coursework for their dual degrees. 

M.S.W./M.P.H.

This dual degree program is intended for students who wish to integrate study of our public health and social services systems.  Students admitted to UConn School of Social Work will complete a minimum of 36 credits of PUBH-related coursework for their dual degrees.

Pharm.D./M.P.H.

This dual degree program is intended for students who wish to integrate study of pharmacotherapy and health promotion, disease prevention and medication safety. Students admitted to UConn will complete a minimum of 36 credits of PUBH-related coursework for their dual degrees.

Admission requirements for dual degree programs

Candidates for a dual degree must meet the admission requirements of both the Program in Applied Public Health Sciences and the professional school in which they are enrolled. The M.P.H. program seeks students with a strong academic record, commitment to the health of the community, relevant background and/or experience, and career goals relevant to public health.  Prospective candidates should meet with program facilitators prior to submitting an application.
